Robert Scott was born on September 22, 1809 near Paris, Kentucky. Even at a young age, he was interested in the iron industry. He was known for making iron is an old fashioned forge and then began building furnaces to increase production.
In 1858, Robert married Catherine (Katherine) Garrett. Catherine was born in Greenup County, Kentucky on July 14, 1814. He and Catherine had many children. Some of the names of their children include: Thomas, Alice, Fannie, Nannie, George, Nora, Rizzie, Jennie and Harry G.
In 1850, the family left Kentucky and moved to Ohio. Here they worked on the Ohio Furnace. Later, Robert worked for the Mt. Vernon Furnace. Eventually, Robert became owner and manager of the Mt. Vernon Furnace, a position he held for twenty-seven years.
In 1867, Scott moved to Ironton with his family. He took charge of the Ironton Rolling Mill. He worked at the mill for only a few years. At the end of his time at the mill, he retired.
Robert Scott was considered a quiet and mild man by his peers. He and his wife found their resting place in Section 7 of Woodland Cemetery.
