Full-Time Youth Programming Specialist at Chesapeake


Title of Position: Youth Programming Specialist
Normal Schedule of work: 37.5 hours per week. M-F 9:45-5:45-with occasional evenings and some
Saturdays coordinating schedules with the Youth Programming Manager.
Rate of pay: 13 dollars per hour This position will earn vacation, sick leave, personal leave, and holidays.
Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED; AND four (4) years of public library operations experience;
OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Requires a valid driver’s license.
Must pass an Ohio Criminal Background Check and be able to work safely with children.
Physical Requirements:
Requires the ability to lift 20 pounds.
Requires the ability to move a 100-pound book cart.
Requires the ability to reach 6 ft. or 4 in. low.
Requires the ability to work in a dusty, public environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to meet and serve the public effectively.
Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to type and work with computers.
Knowledge of and interest in children's books and other library materials and media.
Ability to work well with minimum supervision.
Responsibilities:
 Provides efficient, courteous public service and presents a positive image of the library in attitude,
appearance, and performance of duties.
 Assists the librarian in planning, developing, scheduling, conducting, and promoting age
appropriate programs for children and young adults to encourage reading, literacy and use of
library facilities and materials.
 Present programs as assigned by the librarian, including but not limited to storytimes, school-age
activities, teen events, special events, and seasonal programs.
 Completes program preparation including the procurement and preparation of materials, which
may include selecting books, music, crafts, supplies, and learning activities to enhance program
themes. Also includes the set up for and clean up following programming.
 Work with the librarian to procure needed materials for programming.
 Promotes library services by participating with school and community groups to offer library tours.
 Conducts outreach to external organizations including schools, community centers, and other
organizations to promote library services.
 Works as an integral team member of the Youth Services department to assist in the coordination
of programming initiatives.
 Participates in planning, publicity, and implementation of the Library's summer reading program
and incentives.
 Works with the librarian to promote library facilities, services, and programs through the creation
of promotional materials and use of social media.
 Collaborates with other library staff to facilitate programming and to avoid event conflicts and
possible scheduling issues.
 Tracks and compiles statistics on children’s and young adult programs and reports those
statistics to the librarian as needed.
 Works on special projects as assigned.
