Charles Kingsbury was appointed the first superintendent of Ironton Schools on August 30, 1851. Kingsbury was to receive $600 per year and was authorized to hire one teacher. The teacher, William Ward, made $300 per year. At this time in history, the school was named Union School. The school year was made of two terms: September 1 to March 1 and March 15 to July 15.
In the fall of 1853, Charles Kingsbury was given a leave of absence from his job to go to college. J. B. Beach was named the new superintendent. By 1853-1854 school year, Kingsbury was back at his post as superintendent. He remained superintendent until 1865.
According to the 1860 U.S. Census, Charles was married to Harriet M. Kingsbury and had seven children, Chas, Harriet E., Mary O., Ella, Emma, Martha, and William W. According to an obituary record, Charles also had a son named Francis who died in Portsmouth on May 11, 1852 from the croup.
Charles died on July 5, 1866 at the age of 53 years old. He bled to death. At this time, no other information is known about Kingsbury and his family.
