Marting, Colonel Henry and Margaret

     Henry Adam Marting was born on December 15, 1850 in Greenup County, Kentucky. His parents were Henry and Isabella Knaepper Marting. The family lived in Greenup County until Henry was three years old. At that time, Henry moved with his parents to Scioto County, Ohio. Like many settlers of the time, Henry’s parents were farmers.
     Henry was to make his first venture in the business world in Scioto County. He opened a general store at Gephart in Scioto County, Ohio.

Marting, Dr. William and Erma

    William F. Marting was born in Scioto County on October 24, 1875 to William H. and Caroline Frowine (Frowein) Marting. The family lived in Ironton during William’s youth. In 1883, William graduated from Ironton High School.
     In 1897, William graduated from Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati. The college would later be renamed University of Cincinnati Medical College. After graduation, William practiced medicine in Scioto County for one year.

Means, Thomas and Sarah

           The son of Col. John Means, Thomas Mean was born on November 3, 1803 in Spartensburg, South Carolina. His father built the Union Furnace in Lawrence County. Thomas became the manager of the furnace when he was an adult.
           Upon his father’s death, Thomas found another career. He joined the law firm of Sinton and Means.

     This painting was loaned by the Moore Family to Briggs Lawrence County Public Library in 2007 where it hung in the Phyllis Hamner Room. The painting was later returned to the family.

Moxley, Dr. Nathaniel and Sophia

     Nathaniel Moxley was born on February 8, 1818 in Vermont. He attended medical lectures at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.
     In 1841, Nathaniel moved to Wheelersburg, Ohio to be with his brother.
     In 1848, Nathaniel married Sophia McConnell of Wheelersburg, Ohio. The couple had four children including Nathaniel, Jr, Lucy and Alice.

Norton, Frederick and Nancy

             Born on May 13, 1821 in Richmond, Virginia, Frederick Norton was the son of Thomas and Mary Mower Norton. Unfortunately for young Frederick, his father died in 1823. His family moved to Pennsylvania. His family faced many hardships after the death of his father. At the tender age of 9 years old, Frederick began working in a nail factory. He stayed there until he was fifteen.

Neal, Henry Safford and Mary

Tombstone of Henry Safford Neal    Born on August 25, 1829 in Gallipolis, Ohio, Henry Safford Neal was the son of Henry H. and Lydia Safford Neal. Henry learned a great deal of his beliefs and morals from his father. In 1847, he graduated from Marietta College. He studied law under Honorable Simeon Nash, a well known and respected lawyer. In 1851, Neal was appointed to the bar.
